I finally popped my cherry. Got my first DNF. Ever. Since I started running in 2009. I always have been of the attitude that I will never drop, unless the race officials pull me, or the medics call it. This time, I called it. A lot of factors contributed to the decision. Few thoughts:

- Went into the race with a back spasm the day before. Back was tight all the time. I saw a good sign at mile 18 – my old Chiro, and good friend, Don Freeman was at Browns Bar aid station. He worked on my back at mile 30 (second time at the same aid station).

- As a result of lower back being locked all day long, I overcompensated on the upper back, which then started locking up. So much so that when I wanted to breath deep and fill up my lungs, it hurt, so I ended up with short quick breaths.

- Heat. Even though I have run in worse heat (at Western States), this one hit different. No prior heat training, as it has been a cold spring. First time ever I was running out of water even when aid stations were only 4 or 6 miles apart. It was low 90s, with no wind – felt like 100. Specially from mile 36-40, when it was all on road – the pavement was reflecting the sun. sun on the back, the reflection on the face. Brutal.

- Heat also meant a lot of water on the body, which means lots of chaffing and blisters. My body is susceptible to chaffing and blisters, so nothing new - but another thing that slows me down.

- What would become the real reason that I made the call not to keep going, at mile 41 (Mammoth Bar), I sat down at the aid station and passed out. Not sure if was because I was tired or other reasons. Woke up to realized that I fell asleep. I continued, the climb from Mammoth to Drivers (mile 49) is relentless, with exposed trails. I sat down on the side of the trail, as my eyes were closing while walking. Again, passed out – woken up by a fellow runner.

- Doing mental math in my head I realized the course will eventually be 66 miles. (100K is 62 miles) – I will not be able to meet my goal (Western States Qualifier) of getting under 18 hours. The race cut off is 19 hours. To make it under 19 hours, I will have to do a 16 min pace, which didn’t seem worthwhile, especially when I did not know why I was so tired that the eyes were shutting down.

- So at Mile 50 (Driver Flat, supposed to be mile 48.4), after 14:15 hours, I called it. I still had 4:45 hours to finish. I thought long and hard – I could technically finish, but I was not sure why I was so tired and passing out. But since I was not going to get a Qualifier, I didn’t want to do any further damage to the body.

It was heartwarming to see familiar faces, dedicated volunteers providing support unselfishly, and strong runners from around the world.

I knew this day would come. Didn’t know that I will DNF by my own decision. I have no regrets. Until next time!

Shavihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658594095614647922noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126102474357326474.post-91129607433176585362018-05-07T18:05:00.000-07:002018-05-07T18:05:44.800-07:00AR 50 for Shavi - Folsom - Apr 7, 2018 - 11:22 hoursJust like couple of years ago, I ran the last 9 miles of AR50 with Shavi. He said he was not really going to race this year. It would be a slow run for him which means a perfect run for me..haha. I joined him at Rattlesnake bar where A & C dropped me while W and R slept in the car. They dropped me around 3pm where I waited for Shavi to appear. We were not sure couple of hours before if I was going to run with him or not. So had told him not to wait for me. He did greet me with a smile after running those hard 41 miles. lol.

It was getting pretty warm at that time. Running in hot is beyond me! The beautiful mountains and the sound of water all throughout the course was so melodious. The last three miles were mostly uphill and someone who has already run 47 miles, that uphill can be hard! Shavi would have run it, I am sure, if I wasnt with him, huffing and puffing. lol. I love crossing the finish line with him. W and everyone was waiting at the finish too and he was excited to cross the finish line with daddy and mommy.

Earlier during the day, W and I had met daddy at Big Lots, around mile 14. This is close to our home and easy to get to. The only problem here is that poor W has to get up early on a Saturday but he loves to go cheer the runners and see daddy. So, it works great! Then we quickly went home, had breakfast and drove to Beals Point (mile 26). This is almost the place where road running ends and trail running starts. W was excited to see daddy and cheered the runners. Then he played with rocks and water around the river access and loved it there. It was a cloudy day so far and that is when I decided that I may actually run with Shavi (pace him, in other words). Then we went to A & C's home directly and W played there and they dropped me to Rattlesnake bar.

He just wanted to complete it in under 18 hours to qualify for Western States 100 lottery which he did. Plus with no sleep last 2-3 days due to chores and my surgery the day before, he hardly got rest. Waking up at 3am for this race is no joke. The race starts in Foresthill at 5:30am and packet pick up is at the start. Organizers of the race did a great job, just like all past years. This is a hard course and it has to be since it is a WS100 qualifier. It seems like they would be starting a lottery next year to get into this qualifying race. Until this year, it has been on first come first serve which of course fills up in few hours of opening for registration. This race has over 15000 feet of climbing. This race has 25K distance as well.

Shavi thinks that the first part of the course is harder than the second part. Foresthill is where the race starts and it is the mid-point of the race as well. Foresthill - swinging bridge - Foresthill - Rucky Chucky - Foresthill. The race doesn't allow pacers if you are running it as a qualifier for WS100.

He got home pretty late, after midnight and got me a finisher's pendant with a necklace instead of getting a belt for himself! A great ending to this year's long distance running unless he finds another one;-) Now it will be all about CIM (26.2 miles) in December.

It was again a muddy and wet trail. All races this year until now have been a mud fest. Glad he escaped all safe.

Only 100 mile races motivate him ;-) The course was very muddy and wet yet again because of lot of rains in the region. It was a mud fest. He had to wear his rain jacket most of the course which makes it harder to run fast.

An expensive race than the others but quite common with runners. It was a muddy mess this year with lot of rain the day before and all week before. He got it done in that mess somehow!
A great course for new ultra runners - perfect way to get into ultra running after doing the most famous road race in this region in December - CIM.Ruchihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06258333174798495002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126102474357326474.post-25552189627104456772018-02-17T17:34:00.000-08:002018-05-07T17:48:37.714-07:00FOURmidable 50K for Shavi - Auburn - Feb 17, 2018 - 7:33 hoursNext in the series 50 km. A race that he has done before also - a very tough course as compared to Way Too Cool. He did not beat his time from last year but he wasnt planning on beating it either.
This is a race by Single Track Running and has various distances. Single Track Running does a good job of organizing trail races.

He is going to be taking it easy this year since he is not running the 100 miles race this year as he did not get into the lottery and did not get any ticket either. Probably good for me and W:)

This is a new race by the same organizers as Canyons 100K. Shavi knew that it would be one of the best organized races yet again and probably it was.
Ruchihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06258333174798495002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5126102474357326474.post-84202954734899810082017-12-03T12:08:00.000-08:002018-05-07T17:24:25.517-07:00CIM for Shavi - Dec 3, 2017 - Running for funSome runs can be for fun too, especially when you are not prepared to run the long 26.2 miles and just go out there. Shavi got this done despite no training. No motivation for a short run like that could have been the reason!
He did it in 4:15, though his PR is a almost 30 minutes better than this.

One of the best road races in Sacramento where the whole community participate is called CIM! It is organized by SRA (Sacramento Running Association) which is a big part of the community here in Sacramento. This race runs from Folsom very early in the morning and ends at Sacramento downtown, in front of the Capitol. Best aid stations and great support. Most people are involved in this race, either cheering, running, volunteering, crewing, running the full course or the relay. The race is a Boston qualifier and fills up by August. The prices are low initially and keep going higher and higher quickly.

The best part was that W enjoyed cheering daddy and crossing the finish line with him. The fun part was that I dropped W inside the race course from the walls preventing crowds, so that he could run with daddy for little bit but daddy never noticed. Poor W ran behind him as I yelled at him to go after him. A little scared that I might not lose him in the crowd but good thing that my parents were also waiting at the finish line. So, they knew what was going on. After crossing finish, Shavi noticed the little minion running behind him. Such a cute moment!

He gave up on his PR while pushing me to get a sub-2 PR. I always wanted a sub-2 hour PR but I was so under-trained that I had given up the hope. My last PR at this race was 2.05 but that time, I was training for the marathon in another two months. Not this year.

Shavi pushed me pretty hard for this, especially in the end 3-4 miles. That was when I was giving up but he did not let me. He kept pouring water on my back and hair which would make me feel better. In the last mile, I thought I would die, but not! I gave my best and got it done with Shavi's literal push in just under 2 hours! I couldn't have been more happier that moment. Little things in life - which make you feel so good about yourself! A feeling of accomplishment.

Urban Cow race is a great race organized by CRRM. Great course with some turns which is not too great but the organization is great. It is a very popular road race in Sacramento which starts and ends at William Land park and goes through Old Sacramento. It has several distances: half marathon, 5K run and walk and relay.

Let me blame lack of sleep the night before as I had got back from a long work week in Atlanta, reaching home after 9pm the night before and a little surgery the weekend before. Oh well, we all have our excuses:) I love this race and that is why I decided to do it, in any circumstance. Even though I do not like running in the heat, this race does have some shady neighborhoods on the course. The course has only one aid station which is enough for a 5K race. I like to carry my water with me, in any case as it gets warm and since I try to beat my record every year, I need water! Organized by Buffalo Chips running club, this is a great race. It is very cheap too and if you wait to register, then they give $5 or something discount on the day of Kaiser Fitness Festival women's only race in Sacramento downtown in June.
The bonus for me for running this race is that my sister and my friend run this race with me. Even though we run at our own paces, it is fun to spend before and after-race time with them!

Lot of snow on the course and then lot of sun and heat later in the course. Shavi did great in that weather, still finishing 15 mins faster than his last PR. Lot of drop outs that year. Having not trained to run in snow on the trails made it a hard race. He slipped various times but thankfully returned to the finish line safe. He started with his sleeve cuffs on and then went on to a shirt with holes that could let his skin breathe more.

Brandon and Whitney crewed him along with Alicia and Keith. Both the runner ladies were pregnant but still they crewed him in that heat. Brandon and Keith paced Shavi this year.

I saw him at Michigan Bluff and Foresthill with W. Our friend Sandeep and his bro-in-law Rahul traveled all the way from bay area to see Shavi at finish line. They came only for a few minutes all the way. I did not bring Waaris with me this time at the finish line as it would have been quite early to wake him up when he was with A & C and take him all the way to Auburn. Sleepless nights for everyone involved and a whole big crew, endless endurance and training on the runner's part plus the determination and will power - is what a 100-mile race is about.

He put in his best this year, training for Western States.
This is the longest distance run before the 100 mile race coming up in June. To qualify for Western States, this race needs to be completed in under 18 hours. A real tough course and the heat in the canyons makes this race hard.

This race is one of the best organized races. The race directors do a great job in organizing the race. Shavi has always run this race without help of any crew (or me) and has drop bags ready for himself at the aid stations. The race swag is very cool too. There are multiple distance races in the Canyons Endurance runs: 100K, 50K and 25K.

Training for Western States cannot be easy at all. He completed it in 4:47 hours which is a great time on those tough trails. Organized by Inside Trail, this is a good race as well. He did great with the timing. Western States 100 miles is the motivation for him. When he gets the ticket for it for racing it in June, he trains well as he takes it easy.

It was a messy muddy run as Sacramento had flooded in January-February.

Starts at Cool and ends in Cool. The race director does a great job in marking the course. A low-key race with many locals running it. I started the race with a full sleeve shirt and then as it got warmer, folded the sleeves. It was not that bad but I got some arm protection from the sun! ;-) Lot of uphills and some downhills which I love! Makes the course interesting. We both finished the race in 3:10 and had a good time on the trails.

Well organized short course with 1 aid stations half way across. They have a free fun kids race in the morning of the race. Took W with us last year to run the few feet of race. Fun event. They have a Inflatable bounce house also for kids to enjoy. A very friendly and cheap women's race. The course has lot of turns as it goes in the neighborhoods. Gets warm that time of the year. So, short clothes and lot of sunscreen. One could do without a hat or visor as it goes through some neighborhoods which are shaded enough at times.
So, he HAD to do it. He could not do Canyons 100K (the other qualifier) which is in town, as he had something else going on that weekend.
Going out of town and staying the night before in San Jose was not an easy thing. Thank Goodness for A & C who took care of W while we were gone.

This was not an easy race at all with lot of drop outs. But Shavi got it done in 15.28 hours. The aid stations were great. I went to several aid stations that I could reach. Most of the aid stations were not hard to reach. He finished before it got dark and drove back home the same day.

It was crazy uphill but I enjoyed those serene mountains and the scenery.
W and I went to Big Lots (Mile 11) and then to Beals point (Mile 26) to cheer him and then I went to Rattlesnake bar where I joined him for the last 9 miles.
